eRoots co-develops Elewit's Siroco project
Transmission system operators such as Redeia require feature-rich performant power systems software such as GridCal. At eRoots, we are proud to support the digital transformation of power grid analysis. Our collaboration with Red Eléctrica and Elewit in the Siroco project marks a significant step forward in optimizing grid planning and decision-making. This initiative enhances GridCal, the core of our business model.
An Enhanced Approach to Grid Planning
The Siroco project aims to improve the computational capabilities of GridCal, enabling a more complete power flow calculation method, an improved linear contingency analysis tool, CGMES and PSSE parsing functionalities, linear energy-coupling optimization algorithms, non-linear Optimal Power Flow (ACOPF), advanced GUI visualization features, among others.
The improvement of GridCal has enabled Red Eléctrica to rely on GridCal for planning the national grid, thus complementing the suite of tools that have been traditionally employed. Open-source software allows seamlessly validating the implemented functionalities against renowned tools, while providing additional flexibility that improves engineers' workflows.
eRoots’ Role in Advancing GridCal
At eRoots, we have played a key role in implementing and refining these functionalities. Our expertise in power system modeling and software skills produced satisfactory time-constrained developments, encompassing the following functionalities:
✅ AC Optimal Power Flow (AC OPF): Allows grid operators to find the most efficient dispatch of generation resources while maintaining system security. Built through a custom solver for maximum performance.
✅ Linear Hydro OPF: A specialized model for optimizing hydroelectric generation in combination with power flow constraints.
✅ Expansion Planning: Generation of optimal investment options considering costs and technical criteria by leveraging AI algorithms.
By integrating these advanced capabilities, GridCal becomes an even more powerful tool for system operators, transmission planners, and researchers—helping them make data-driven decisions for a more reliable and sustainable grid.
